Episode Notes

After growing up experiencing acts of racism, gaslighting, close mindedness, and even hearing “you’re what’s wrong with America'' from a so-called “friend”, Ericka Jones is not going to let discrimination win. She recognizes her responsibility to speak out, lead, and enforce change-- a  responsibility that we all have. This goes beyond just reposting an Instagram or not personally making rude comments. It is about being an ally by calling someone in or out when necessary.

“Calling in” means circling back to a hurtful or oppressive comment someone made in private, such as by shooting them an email or grabbing lunch to discuss what was said. “Calling out” means letting someone know their comment was hurtful in a public space, such as in a board meeting or company call. There can be learning opportunities and growth from both for the person who said it and those who heard it.

There are other options for fighting against discrimination or harassment that Ericka touches on. These are described as the 5 D’s, which are:

Ericka’s work is based on her goal of connection and respect. She values “connection through difference and encouraging others to hear both sides. To disagree and know we can walk away with dignity and respect based on our differences”. She strives to promote love, kindness, inclusivity, and reminds us that the experiences we face are valid.
