INTERVIEW: Paige sits down with Dr. Nikki Sammet to discuss her experience with mental health, the impact social media has on our reality, and working on our own internal validation.
Dr. Nikki Sammet is the founder of Confident Coach Accelerator, Becoming Mama & Beyond, the What Nik Knows Podcast, and is a Transcendental Meditator and a yoga teacher… she does it all!
In this episode, Nikki opens up about her journey with ADHD, anxiety, depression, and how the fight to “not be different” caused her to lose hold of her identity. Nikki has struggled with her mental health since she was a very young age. At age 10, she was diagnosed with ADHD and she explains how being silenced about it impacted her socially, academically, and her self-esteem as a whole. Nikki emphasizes the importance of viewing these diagnoses as mental health, not mental illness. She encourages others to have the hard conversations about what they are going through is what makes you uniquely, YOU!
Nikki also discusses her Ph.D. research which revolves around how social media impacts millennial women. Social media, when used in an unhealthy manner, causes us the inability to distinguish what’s real and what is not. We associate what we view as the standard and get down on ourselves when we aren’t “meeting” the standard. Nikki stresses the importance of establishing and maintaining a healthy relationship with technology, whether that’s setting boundaries, following only people we want to follow, or putting it away at a designated time. She reminds us that “we need to start and end each day with ourselves”, not just the posts and stories we see.
