INTERVIEW: Paige sits down with Emily Schickli to discuss mental health and the things Emily experienced in her younger years to accept how far she has come now.
Paige and Emily preface this episode with the overarching theme of mental health. Many people in our lives are struggling with mental health, and many people don’t have the support to help them navigate their way through it.
Emily had a tough time trying to diagnose these invisible illnesses she was encountering as a result of her struggle with mental health. As she discusses, mental health and physical health go hand in hand, and people do not need to suffer as a result of their mental health. She now realizes how parallel the two are, they are so interconnected. Emily’s healing journey included changing her diet such as cutting out dairy, many people did not understand her and why she was embarking on this journey. Another big topic within this episode is burnout. Emily describes how she was burning herself out, by overworking herself and proving her worth. She was continually overworking, this caused chronic pain, she then realized that there was a disconnect between her mind and body. Emily started her mind, body, darma when she realized this disconnect and realized she needed a change. People all over feel this burnout, many doctors try to make people change everything at once, whereas like Emily says our nervous system is in survival mode and changes make us more overwhelmed. To actually heal we need to change slowly or do “bite size self care”.
We must be able to open up to others around us and share our mental health struggles. Sharing and allowing ourselves to talk about our struggles allows us to figure out a way to help us and help others around us. Having a safe space to open up is very important. Emily did this by having an open story time at her workplace, they all were able to open up and talk about their struggles. This allows others to see that we are all going through something, and we can all help each other. We have to make a culture of inclusivity and support for more and more people to open up and share, knowing they are not alone.
